Louisa Anne Twamley was born to Louisa Ann née Meredith and Thomas Twamley. She was born in Birmingham, England and was educated mainly by her mother. In 1835, she published a volume of poetry which was reviewed favorably by many critics. This was followed by another book titled The Romance of Nature, mostly in verse. In 1839, she published another volume subtitled An autumn ramble on the Wye. This was an account of a tour she made on the River Wye. She married her cousin, Meredith Charles on 18 April 1839 in Birmingham at Old Edgbaston Church. Meredith had immigrated to Tasmania (formerly Van Diemen's Land) in 1821 with his father and the other members of the family. They had been pioneers of whaling, grazing and other activities on Tasmania's East Coast around Swansea.

Meredith had become a squatter in New South Wales in the Canberra district. In June 1839, Louisa and her husband sailed for New South Wales. They arrived at Sydney in September of the same year and after travelling into the interior she returned to the coast where she lived at Homebush for about one year. For most of her life, she lived on properties around Swansea. She published a book titled “Some of My Bush Friends in Tasmania” in 1860. This book contained detailed full-color plates which were printed by the chromolithography process. She illustrated the book by herself. Her art is very popular today and they can be seen hanging on the walls of many prestigious buildings around the globe.
