Amanda Houston is a Fine Artist living and working in Cornelius, O.R. As a child living in Saudi Arabia and Africa, she remembers watching he mother paint oil landscapes. Both her parents encouraged her to follow her creative passion. They were both educators. Amanda was educated in New England. She studied at the University of Vermont where she got a B.S. in Apparel Design and Merchandising she then proceeded to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City for her graduate degree in Textile Design. Amanda was Nike’s first Apparel Innovation Director and L.L. Bean’s first apparel designer. She helped launch Nike’s first e-commerce business during the dot-com boom. Amanda is always drawn to the moments when the light is most dramatic, when cast shadows lure her in for a closer look and the contrast of moods or colors are most intense.

She’s primarily a pastel painter that dabbles in oils but enjoys innovating with the medium, as she’s doing with her pastel drawings on copper. She strives for depth and rhythm in her work, for textural surface qualities, for edges that are lost and found, regardless of her medium. After 17 years of traveling, merchandising and designing sports apparel for global brands, Amanda found she was managing more and creating less. Eventually the only colored pens on her desk were highlighters for reading market research trends and financial reports. She always knew that she would paint someday, but she didn’t want to wait until she was 65 to start. Amanda is now allowing the time for the artist in her to finally come out.
